Penns Creek Improvements

PVCA will be participating in major improvements to Penns Creek in the summer of 2008. Three sites have been identified, and PVCA will be the lead partner on a site at the end of Kline Rd on the Myers/Long property, below the sewage treatment plant. At this site the bank is badly eroded, and the improvements include:
  • Installing Log veins at the upper stretch of the stream
  • Constructing a 900 foot mud sill below the log veins
  • Planting trees and/or shrubs in the riparian buffer
  • Installing a stream-bank fence (approx. 3000 linear feet of one-strand high tensile material)
  • Installing an alternative watering system for livestock (spring development and trough)

Partnering with PVCA in this project are:
  • Centre County Conservation District
  • PA Fish & Boat commission/Partners for Fish and Wildlife
  • Spring Mills Fish and Game Club
  • US Fish & Wildlife Service
  • Landowners Myers/Long, Spring Mills Fish and Game Club, and Lysle Sherwin

PVCA will play a smaller role at two other sites with eroded stream banks. These sites are the Spring Mills Fish and Game Club and Lysle Sherwin properties. Fish habitat structures will be constructed in both locations.

We are excited to be leading and involved in improvements to the streams and water quality in the watershed. Our members and supporters have told us that projects like this are of utmost importance to them.

We will soon be making our spring appeal, asking you to help fund this important undertaking. We are hoping that your generosity will make this project possible.
